Stefon Diggs will not sign on 2012 National Signing Day, will visit Maryland

MaxPreps has learned that Our Lady of Good Counsel (Olney, Md.) wide receiver Stefon Diggs will make his fifth and final visit this weekend, and it will be his shortest trip yet – to the University of Maryland.

Good Counsel coach Bob Milloy told MaxPreps on Tuesday that Diggs, a MaxPreps U.S. Air Force All-American, will most likely announce his decision on Feb.10, so don't look for an announcement tomorrow on National Signing Day.

Diggs has made official visits to California, Florida, Auburn and Ohio State.

"His head is spinning," Milloy said in a phone interview. "I don't think he has any idea where he wants to go. All I ask him is, ‘How was your weekend?' And he replies, ‘How could it not be good with the entire campus falling all over you?'"

The 6-foot-1, 190-pound standout is the nation's No. 14 recruit according to MaxPreps and the No. 3 athlete.

There's no doubt that it's Diggs' combination of speed and strength that are the main reasons he is one of the most prized recruits in the country. But his coach says it's his savvy from the neck up that helps separate him from others at his position.

"He's got a terrific understanding of what's going on out there," Milloy said. "You only have to tell him once and he figures it out. He understands coverage and the whole game. He has a mind like a coach."

Diggs, who also can play defensive back, is best known for his big-play ability. His 4.4 speed in the 40-yard dash enables him to separate himself from defenders and then outrun them to the end zone once he catches the ball. He accounted for 1,443 all-purpose yards and 13 touchdowns as a senior.

MaxPreps recruiting expert Tom Lemming calls Diggs "one of the most exciting players in the nation."

Diggs told MaxPreps in early October that he was putting off his college decision until after the season so he could concentrate on helping lead his team to the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference title. It proved to be the right move, as the Falcons (12-0) coasted to the conference championship.
