The St. Edward's Pirates's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Friday after their fourth straight loss dating back to last season. They suffered a tough 61-40 defeat at the hands of Cocoa Beach. St. Edward's was given a dose of their own medicine in this game as Cocoa Beach apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in January.
Despite the loss, St. Edward's still got an impressive performance from Nate Sparkman, who scored ten points. The match was Sparkman's third in a row with at least ten points. Jayzere Cannon was another key contributor, scoring seven points.
Jay Matthews was his usual excellent self, dropping a double-double on 21 points and 14 rebounds for Cocoa Beach. That makes it four consecutive games in which Matthews has scored at least 25% of Cocoa Beach's points. Another player making a difference was Max Louis, who scored 11 points along with seven rebounds and four blocks.
St. Edward's has fallen quite a ways from their 16-6 record last season and are now at 0-3. As for Cocoa Beach, the win makes it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 2-2.
St. Edward's will head out on the road to face off against Pine at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. As for Cocoa Beach, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Merritt Island at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Merritt Island comes in still looking for their first win of the season.
