Basketball Game Preview: Mar Vista Mariners vs. San Ysidro Cougars

Mar Vista is 1-9 against San Ysidro since February of 2015 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Friday. The Mar Vista Mariners will look to defend their home court against the San Ysidro Cougars at 6:30 p.m. Having both just faced considerable losses, both teams are looking to turn things around.

Mar Vista is headed into the contest out to prove that what happened against Bonita Vista on Monday (when they were outscored in every quarter) was just a minor bump in the road. Mar Vista lost 84-61 to Bonita Vista. While losing is never fun, the Mariners can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 891st, while the Barons are ranked 256th).

Even though the team lost, they still had their share of impressive performances. One of the best came from Jahaziel Catano, who went 9 for 14 en route to 24 points and six rebounds. That's the most points he has posted since back in December of 2024. Jonan Ceballos was another key player, going 7 of 12 on his way to 17 points and five boards.

Meanwhile, San Ysidro was not able to break out of their rough patch on Wednesday as the team picked up their eighth straight loss. They took a blow against Southwest SD, falling 76-42. The Cougars were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 44-21.

Mar Vista's defeat ended a five-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 10-11. As for San Ysidro, their loss dropped their record down to 2-20.

Mar Vista was able to grind out a solid victory over San Ysidro in their previous meeting two weeks ago, winning 67-60. One of the biggest obstacles the team faced in that game was San Ysidro's Jordan Miranda, who posted 19 points and five assists.
