The Walnut Mustangs had already won seven in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 30.7 points), and they went ahead and made it eight on Friday. They came out on top against Covina by a score of 64-56. Having run the score up that high, both teams might be doing some extra defensive drills very soon.
Walnut's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Myles Wainwright, who scored 16 points. Wainwright continues to roll, besting his previous point total in each of the last three games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Nathan Yen, who scored ten points along with five rebounds.
Walnut has been performing well recently as they've won nine of their last 11 contests, which provided a nice bump to their 13-5 record this season. As for Covina, their loss dropped their record down to 12-5.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Walnut will have some time to savor their win since their next game is a little ways off: they'll take on Rowland at 6:30 p.m. on January 9th. Rowland is coming into the game on a three-game losing streak. Covina and Compton will face off at 6:30 p.m. on January 3rd without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. Compton is hoping to put an end to a five-game streak of away losses.
