The Mapletown Maples scored the most points they've had all season to find success on Wednesday. They secured a 70-65 W over Geibel Catholic. The victory was some much needed relief for Mapletown as it spelled an end to their three-game losing streak.
Geibel Catholic's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Tommy Kolencik, who dropped a double-double on 20 points and 14 rebounds. Those 14 rebounds set a new season-high mark for him. Another player making a difference was Gary Tarbuk, who scored 12 points along with six assists and six rebounds.
Even though they lost, Geibel Catholic were working as a unit and finished the game with 17 assists. That's the most assists they've managed all season.
Mapletown's victory ended a nine-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 2-8. As for Geibel Catholic, they still haven't won a game yet this season and fell to 0-12.
Mapletown will look to defend their home court on Friday against Monessen at 7:00 p.m. One thing working in Monessen's favor is that they have posted big point totals in their last seven contests. Geibel Catholic won't have much time to rest: their next contest is against Winchester Thurston at 7:00 p.m. on January 11th. The timing is sure in Winchester Thurston's favor as the squad sits on four straight wins at home while Geibel Catholic has been banged up by eight consecutive losses on the road dating back to last season.
