The Buchanan Bears will be taking part in a tournament against the Hanford West Huskies at 3:00 p.m. on Monday. Buchanan is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.3 runs per game this season.
The home team had won the previous four meetings between Buchanan and Clovis West, and Buchanan kept the tradition alive. The Bears blew past the Golden Eagles 13-6 on Friday. The high-flying hitting performance was a huge turnaround for the Bears considering their two-run performance the match before.
Brooklyn Ainsworth made a big impact no matter where she played. On the mound, she pitched six innings while giving up just two earned runs off five hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks any time she's pitched this season. She was also big at the plate, scoring two runs while going 2-for-4.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Harmony McMurry, who got on base in three of her four plate appearances with one home run, three runs, and four RBI. That's the most runs she has posted since back in March. Another player making a difference was Addy Schafer, who went 1-for-3 with four RBI, one run, and one double.
Buchanan always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .576. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Clovis West only posted an OBP of .323.
Meanwhile, Hanford West entered their tilt with Kingsburg on Friday with four consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with five. They walked away with an 8-4 victory over the Vikings. The game was the first time the Huskies have beaten the Vikings on their field since April 9, 2019.
Rylan Montoya spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and two unearned) runs on five hits. Those hits were her first of the season.
On the hitting side, Emma Guzman was incredible, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 2-for-3. Kennidy Perryman was another key player, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 2-for-4.
Buchanan's record is now 14-4. As for Hanford West, their record now sits at 13-2.
Hanford West's hitters will have their work cut out for them on Monday. Buchanan has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.1 strikeouts per game. It's a different story for Hanford West, though, as they've been averaging only 3.7 strikeouts. Will Buchanan keep running through batters, or will the Huskies buck the trend?
Buchanan came out on top in a nail-biter against Hanford West in their previous matchup back in March of 2024, sneaking past 4-2. Will the Bears repeat their success, or do the Huskies have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
