Salem and Alvirne are an even 4-4 against one another since May of 2016, but likely not for long. The Blue Devils will square off against the Broncos at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
Salem fell victim to Bishop Guertin and their airtight pitching crew on Monday. They came up short against the Cardinals, falling 12-0. Having soared to a lofty 11 runs in the game before, the Blue Devils' shutout was a dramatic turnaround.
Meanwhile, Alvirne came into Monday's matchup having lost seven straight, but that streak is now in the rearview. They were the clear victors by an 8-0 margin over Nashua North on Monday. The game marked the Broncos' most dominant victory of the season so far.
Brody Buja made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he didn't allow a single earned run while striking out 11 over six innings pitched. That's the most strikeouts he has posted since back in May of 2025. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-4 with two stolen bases and one RBI.
In other pitching news, Gavin Baviello looked comfortable as he pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has become a key player for Alvirne: the team is 2-1 when he allows at most three hits, but 1-6 otherwise.
Back at the plate, Alvirne let Alex Drown and Jasper Workman run wild. Drown went 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run, while Workman went 1-for-4 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI. Those runs marked the first that Workman has scored this season. Another player making a difference was Matty Bebris, who went 2-for-4 with one stolen base and one double.
Alvirne kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.
Alvirne's win was their first in the league, bumping their league record up to 1-7 and their overall record up to 3-7. As for Salem, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost five of their last six contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 2-6 record this season.
Everything went Salem's way against Alvirne in their previous matchup back in April of 2025, as Salem made off with an 11-1 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Blue Devils since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
