Baseball Recap: Fitzgerald Has No Trouble Against Detroit Cristo Rey

After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Merritt Academy, Fitzgerald was happy to have turned things around on Thursday. They put the hurt on the Detroit Cristo Rey WOLVES with a sharp 12-2 victory. The result was nothing new for the Spartans, who have now won nine matchups by six runs or more so far this season.

Dylan Bush made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he struck out 12 batters over five innings while giving up just two earned runs off two hits. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't tossed less than seven strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double. Fitzgerald is 8-2 when Bush posts two or more runs, but 3-11 otherwise.

In other batting news, Thomas Baranski was a standout: he went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI. He is becoming a predictor of Fitzgerald's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 6-2 (and 5-11 when he doesn't). Another player making a difference was Blake Elkins, who went 2-for-3 with four RBI, one stolen base, and one run.

Fitzgerald always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .613. The last time their OBP was this high was back in April.

Fitzgerald's win bumped their record up to 11-13. As for Detroit Cristo Rey, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 3-8.

Coming up, Fitzgerald will face off against Cousino at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Detroit Cristo Rey, they will square off against Frankel Jewish Academy of Metro Detroit at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Jaguars have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 9.2 runs per game on average), something the WOLVES will no doubt try to take advantage of.
