Independence is on a three-game streak of home losses, and Woodlawn-B.R. a seven-game streak of away losses dating back to last season. However, someone's due for a change in luck on Friday. The Independence Tigers will look to defend their home field against the Woodlawn-B.R. Panthers at 4:00 p.m. Independence has given up an average of 13.8 runs per game this season, but Friday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.
Independence couldn't beat Maurepas on Monday even though they stacked five runs on them in the first inning. The Tigers came up short against the Wolves, falling 15-6. While the Tigers didn't get the win, they did start the game off strong, beating the Wolves 5-0 in the first period.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Woodlawn-B.R.). They put the hurt on Slaughter Community Charter with a sharp 13-7 victory on Thursday. The Panthers haven't had any issues with the Knights recently, as the game was their fifth consecutive win against them.
Cade Saurage made a splash while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. Saurage was also big at the plate, going 1-for-4 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in March of 2025.
In other batting news, Josh McKenzie was incredible, going 2-for-4 with four runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. Those runs marked the first that he has scored this season. Another player making a difference was Michael Gray Jr, who went 1-for-5 with one triple, two RBI, and one run.
Independence's defeat dropped their record down to 0-6. As for Woodlawn-B.R., their victory (their first of the season) made their record 1-6.
Independence came out on top in a nail-biter against Woodlawn-B.R. when the teams last played back in March of 2025, sneaking past 6-5. Will the Tigers repeat their success, or do the Panthers have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
