Each year since 2006, MaxPreps has recognized outstanding performers in high school football. America's source for high school sports continues the tradition to close out the 2023 season by naming the top player in each state. Selections are based on team success and individual excellence in addition to local and state accolades.
P.J. Woodland of
Oak Grove (Hattiesburg) is the 2023 MaxPreps Mississippi High School Football Player of the Year. The 6-foot, 165-pound senior cornerback/wide receiver led the Warriors to a 12-1 record and Class 7A state title.
Woodland was a huge factor on both sides of the ball for the Warriors. Offensively, he had over 1,400 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns, averaging over 20 yards per catch. Defensively, he recorded 50 tackles and five interceptions with a pair of pick-sixes.
Coaches in Mississippi picked Woodland as the Class 7A Defensive Player of the Year.
In a 49-45 win over Brandon in the semifinals, Woodland hauled in 10 receptions for 178 yards and a touchdown.
After fielding 17 FBS offers, Woodland committed to LSU in October.
Each state's MaxPreps Player of the Year will be considered for inclusion in the MaxPreps All-America Team.
