Basketball Recap: Anthony Wayne Takes Down Ranked Mason

On Sunday, Anthony Wayne faced Mason in a battle between two of the state's top teams. The Anthony Wayne Generals strolled past the Mason Comets with points to spare, taking the game 61-47. Winning may never get old, but the Generals sure are getting used to it with their sixth in a row.

Anthony Wayne had a senior duo take command as Elise Bender dropped a double-double on 27 points and 11 rebounds and Brooke Bender went 6 for 12 on her way to 19 points and four steals. The match was Elise's 12th in a row with at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Leah Pike, who posted seven points and five boards.

Anthony Wayne smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 11 offensive boards in three consecutive contests.

When it comes to explaining why Mason lost, don't look at Anna Habra. Despite the final result, she went 6 of 11 en route to 12 points along with five rebounds and three steals. Habra has been hot recently, having posted three or more steals the last three times she's played. Adaia Kesler was another key player, putting up six points.

Anthony Wayne has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won 11 of their last 12 games, which provided a nice bump to their 14-2 record this season. They've dominated over that stretch too, winning by an average of 39.8 points. As for Mason, the defeat snapped their winning streak at 14 games and leaves them with a 14-1 record.

Anthony Wayne will head out to square off against Clay at 7:15 p.m. on January 27th. Clay has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last three games. Mason has already played their next match, a 46-35 victory against Olmsted Falls on the 20th.
