The Glenwood Titans will head out to challenge the Belleville West Maroons at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Glenwood is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.8 runs per game this season.
Glenwood let Highland stack four runs on them in the third inning on Saturday but luckily Glenwood prevailed anyway. The Titans won by a run and slipped past the Bulldogs 6-5. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Titans have posted since April 15th.
Andrew Wahlbrink tossed a big game, not allowing a single earned run over 4.1 innings pitched. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks any time he's pitched this season.
At the plate, Andrew Schwartz was excellent, going 1-for-3 with three RBI and two runs. Michael Lucas also deserves some recognition as he got his first hit of the season.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Belleville West). Everything went their way against East St. Louis on Tuesday as they made off with a 16-1 win. The team's explosion at the plate also rewarded the Maroons with their most commanding win of the season.
Belleville West let Treyton Bowen and Casey Fultz run wild. Bowen went 3-for-4 with five RBI, one stolen base, and one run, while Fultz got on base in all four of his plate appearances with four runs and one double. Those five RBI gave Bowen a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Will Fessel, who went 1-for-3 with two RBI, one run, and one double.
Belleville West always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .722. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Glenwood is on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last nine matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 14-6 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.3 runs on average over those games. As for Belleville West, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 15-8.
Everything went Glenwood's way against Belleville West in their previous matchup back in March of 2018, as Glenwood made off with an 11-0 victory. Will the Titans repeat their success, or do the Maroons have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
