The West Mesa Mustangs entered their tilt with the Manzano Monarchs with two consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with three. Everything went West Mesa's way against Manzano on Friday as West Mesa made off with a 59-33 win. Given West Mesa's advantage in MaxPreps' New Mexico basketball rankings (they are ranked 22nd, while Manzano is ranked 92nd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Unknown Athlete was the offensive standout of the matchup as she scored 17 points along with four steals. Athlete is absolutely dominating the steal category: she's posted at least two every time she's taken the court this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Marissa De hoyos, who scored nine points along with six rebounds.
When it comes to explaining why Manzano lost, one person who can't be blamed is Hen?kaiazia Shorter. Despite the final result, she scored 11 points along with seven rebounds and four steals. Selena DeVargas was another key contributor, scoring nine points along with five rebounds.
West Mesa's victory bumped their record up to 3-0. As for Manzano, they now have a losing record at 2-3.
West Mesa will look to defend their home court on Tuesday against St. Pius X at 6:00 p.m. St. Pius X will be looking to extend their current three-game winning streak. Manzano's road trip will continue as they head out to face Del Norte at 7:00 p.m. on December 12th. Hopefully Del Norte focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 31 on Saturday.
