Covenant Day's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Carson Massey led the charge by throwing for 219 yards and three TDs on only 16 passes. The dominant performance also gave Massey a new career-high in passer rating (145.8). Michael Banke helped Massey out on the ground, rushing for 71 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while also picking up 32 receiving yards.
On the other side of the ball, a lot of the credit has to go to Covenant Day's defense and their three sacks. The team can thank three different players for their defensive prowess: Mark Henderson, James Barry, and Levi Hoffman, who each picked up one sack apiece.
Meanwhile, Asheville School (Independent) didn't have quite enough to beat High Point Christian Academy on Friday and fell 24-21.
The match pitted two dominant backs against one another in Shiloh Mukendi and Jaylen Moore. Moore had a great game and rushed for 233 yards and two scores while picking up 7.3 yards per carry. Meanwhile, Mukendi was balling out in the loss, rushing for 107 yards on only eight carries.
Asheville School (Independent) didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. Mukendi picked up that interception and then proceeded to rub salt in the wound by taking it back the other way for a touchdown. He got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.
Covenant Day's victory bumped their record up to 2-6. As for Asheville School (Independent), their loss dropped their record down to 3-2-1.
Covenant Day took a serious blow against Asheville School (Independent) in their previous matchup back in October of 2023, falling 35-0. Can the Lions avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
