The Mullen Mustangs pushed their score all the way to 59 on Wednesday, but even that wasn't enough to win. They took a 67-59 hit to the loss column at the hands of Overland. Mullen was given a dose of their own medicine in this game as Overland apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in February of 2023.
Mason Bonner and Jordan Leslie certainly did their best on Wednesday to try and avoid the loss. Bonner dropped a double-double on 15 points and 14 rebounds, while Leslie scored 13 points along with nine assists and eight rebounds. Leslie is absolutely dominating the steal category: he's posted at least two every time he's taken the court this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Anderson Brendle, who scored ten points along with six rebounds and two steals.
Even though they lost, Mullen smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 17 offensive rebounds. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Overland only pulled down nine offensive rebounds.
Overland's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Siraaj Ali led the charge by scoring 14 points along with seven rebounds and six assists. Another player making a difference was Tj Manuel, who scored 15 points along with two steals.
Mullen's defeat dropped their record down to 8-5. As for Overland, their victory ended a three-game drought on the road and puts them at 8-6.
Mullen will face off against Cherry Creek at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. That game will pit two of the most dominant guards against one another: Jeremiah Hammond and Leslie. As for Overland, they will be playing at home against Eaglecrest at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Eaglecrest and Overland are at an even 5-5 over their past ten head-to-heads.
