The Fleming Island Golden Eagles were the 54-42 winner over the Menendez Falcons when they last played one another back in December of 2022, but their luck changed this time around. Fleming Island took a 46-41 hit to the loss column at the hands of Menendez. While losing is never fun, Fleming Island can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 296th, while Menendez is ranked 137th).
Fleming Island's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Ariana Pierce, who scored seven points along with six rebounds and four steals. Pierce is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last four games she's played. Another player making a difference was Devyn Dudones, who scored ten points along with three blocks.
Kali Harris continued her habit of posting crazy stat lines for Menendez, scoring 19 points. That makes it four consecutive games in which Harris has scored at least a third of Menendez's points. Sophia Scibelli was another key contributor, scoring eight points.
Fleming Island has traveled a rocky road recently, as they've lost six of their last eight contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 5-11 record this season. As for Menendez, their win bumped their record up to 10-5.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Fleming Island won't have much time to rest: their next matchup is against Flagler Palm Coast at 6:00 p.m. on January 16th. As for Menendez, they will look to defend their home court on Thursday against Deltona at 6:00 p.m.
