The Westminster Owls will take on the South River Seahawks at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. Westminster has given up an average of 9.3 runs per game this season, but Monday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.
Westminster is probably headed into the game with a chip on their shoulder considering Saint James just ended the team's five-game winning streak on Saturday. They fell 11-6 to the Saints.
Ryley Winebrunner and Alyssa Ward did some serious damage despite the final result: Winebrunner went 2-for-4 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI, while Ward went a perfect 3-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI. That home run marked the first that Winebrunner has launched this season.
Meanwhile, South River made easy work of Severn Run on Friday and carried off a 12-2 win. The Seahawks might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won nine matchups by six runs or more this season.
Addie Binko made a big impact no matter where she played. She pitched four innings while giving up just two earned runs off six hits. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than one walk in four consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 1-for-2 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
In other batting news, Avery Ford was excellent, going 2-for-3 with two runs and one double. Another player making a difference was Sloane Kelly, who went 1-for-3 with two runs and two RBI.
South River pushed their record up to 13-7 with the victory, which was their sixth straight at home. The home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.2 runs on average over those games. As for Westminster, their defeat dropped their record down to 7-9.
Monday's contest will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Westminster hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .334. However, it's not like South River struggles in that department as they've averaged .322. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Everything went Westminster's way against South River in their previous matchup back in May of 2024, as Westminster made off with an 11-2 victory. Will the Owls repeat their success, or do the Seahawks have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
