The Westridge Tigers will take on the Vasquez Mustangs at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Westridge has now lost 14 straight dating back to last season, leaving the team hunting for their first win since the 20th.
Brentwood School hit Westridge with a four-run first inning on Friday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Tigers came up short against the Eagles, falling 12-1.
Westridge saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was G Rashid, who went 1-for-2 with one stolen base and one RBI.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Vasquez). Everything went their way against Castle Park on Friday as they made off with a 23-6 victory. The result was nothing new for the Mustangs, who have now won three games by 15 runs or more so far this season.
Madisyn Wharton made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, tossing three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one walk in four consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs, two RBI, and one double.
In other batting news, Mariah Pulido and Faith Nasrallah did most of the damage at the plate: Pulido went 3-for-4 with one home run, five RBI, and three runs, while Nasrallah went a perfect 4-for-4 with four runs, three RBI, and one stolen base. Those five RBI gave Pulido a new career-high. Daniella Escamilla was another key player, going a perfect 2-for-2 with one home run, two stolen bases, and two runs.
Vasquez always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .829. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Westridge's defeat dropped their record down to 0-3. As for Vasquez, they now have a winning record of 3-2.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Wednesday as neither team is afraid to steal. Westridge has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 4.7 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Vasquez struggles in that department as they've been averaging 8.2 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Westridge was able to grind out a solid win over Vasquez in their previous matchup back in May of 2019, winning 5-0. Do the Tigers have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Mustangs turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
