The Burges Mustangs had already won six in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 31.2 points), and they went ahead and made it seven on Saturday. They came out on top against Mayfield by a score of 48-41. The win was all the more spectacular given Burges' disadvantage in MaxPreps's basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 172nd in Texas, while Mayfield is ranked seventh in New Mexico).
Jordyn Hernandez was her usual excellent self, dropping a double-double on 30 points and 14 rebounds. The contest was her 22nd in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Priscilla Diaz, who scored 11 points along with five assists and three steals.
Mayfield's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Victoria Kirker, who scored eight points along with six rebounds. Another player making a difference was Ceanna Mckines, who scored nine points along with six rebounds.
Burges pushed their record up to 16-6 with that win, which was their fourth straight on the road. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 66.0 points per game. As for Mayfield, their defeat ended a four-game streak of wins at home dating back to last season and dropped them to 8-2.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Burges will square off against Canutillo at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Mayfield and Silver will face off at 7:00 p.m. on January 2nd without much rest after finishing up games yesterday.
