Waltonville is 7-1 against Woodlawn since April of 2018 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Tuesday. The Spartans will welcome the Cardinals at 4:30 p.m. Waltonville's pitching crew has only allowed 3.4 runs per game this season, so Woodlawn's hitters will have their work cut out for them.
Waltonville took a ten-run defeat the last time they faced off against North Clay/Clay City, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Spartans narrowly escaped with a victory as the squad sidled past North Clay/Clay City 5-4. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Spartans have posted since May 22, 2024.
Meanwhile, Woodlawn won against Hamilton County on Wednesday with ten runs and they decided to stick to that run total again on Thursday. The Cardinals came out on top against Cisne by a score of 10-5. The game was the first time the Cardinals have beaten the Runnin' Lions on their field since April 26, 2019.
Gianni Cheatam made a splash while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing four innings while giving up three earned runs off six hits. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in strikeouts (five). He was even better at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two runs, two RBI, and one double.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on JW Morgan, who got on base in four of his five plate appearances with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI. He is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last five games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Nick Cary, who went 2-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.
Waltonville is on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 8-5 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.7 runs on average over those games. As for Woodlawn, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 3-9.
Everything went Waltonville's way against Woodlawn in their previous meeting back in April of 2024, as Waltonville made off with a 7-0 victory. Do the Spartans have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Cardinals turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
