The Burnet Bulldogs will head out on the road to face off against the Davenport Wolves at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Burnet fell on hard times earlier this season, but after back-to-back wins it seems like their luck might finally be changing. Everything went their way against Canyon Lake on Friday as Burnet made off with a 45-20 victory.
Burnet can attribute much of their success to Rhett Murray, who threw for 361 yards and three touchdowns while completing 88.9% of his passes, and Grant Jones, who gained 263 total yards and two touchdowns. Jones' longest reception was for an incredible 98 yards. Garner Krause did his part to keep the secondary busy, picking up 131 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
Meanwhile, Davenport entered their tilt with Lampasas with four consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with five. Davenport breezed by Lampasas on the road to the tune of 56-21. The contest was all but wrapped up at the end of the third, by which point Davenport had established a 28 point advantage.
Davenport's win on Friday was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Triston Hamlin, who threw for 363 yards and five touchdowns while picking up 12.1 yards per attempt. Hamlin hasn't dropped below three passing touchdowns for three straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Barrett Fallon, who rushed for 129 yards and three touchdowns.
Another reason for the win was Davenport's imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for seven sacks. The heavy lifting was done by Ryan Howe and Gianni Evans-williams who racked up five sacks between them.
Their wins bumped Burnet to 5-3 and Davenport to 6-2.
Burnet ended up a good deal behind Davenport in their previous meeting back in October of 2022, losing 42-28. Can Burnet avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
