The Gibsonburg Golden Bears will face off against the Margaretta Polar Bears at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Gibsonburg is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.5 runs per game this season.
Gibsonburg is probably headed into the match with a chip on their shoulder considering New Riegel just ended the team's five-game winning streak on Saturday. They fell just short of the Blue Jackets by a score of 4-2. Golden Bears fans who chose to attend the game sure picked the wrong one: it was the first time the team's lost against the Blue Jackets since on Saturday.
Alivia Wauford spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and two unearned) runs on six hits and racked up ten Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in three consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Cheyenne Reese was cooking despite her team's loss, going 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, one run, and one double.
Meanwhile, Margaretta fought the good fight in their extra-innings game against Sandusky on Saturday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Blue Streaks by a score of 19-18. Despite running the score up even higher than they did in their prior game on Tuesday (15), the Polar Bears still had to take the loss.
Mattie Kovalaske led a balanced group of hitters, going 4-for-6 with five runs, two triples, and two stolen bases. Those triples were her first of the season. The team also got some help courtesy of Ellaynah Schaefer, who went 4-for-5 with four stolen bases, four runs, and one RBI.
Gibsonburg's loss dropped their record down to 15-7. As for Margaretta, they have been struggling recently as they've lost ten of their last 13 contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 6-14 record this season.
Margaretta's hitters will have their work cut out for them on Tuesday. Gibsonburg has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 6.8 strikeouts per game. It's a different story for Margaretta, though, as they've been averaging only 3.8 strikeouts. Will Gibsonburg keep running through batters, or will the Polar Bears buck the trend?
Gibsonburg might still be hurting after the 14-4 defeat they got from Margaretta when the teams last played back in April of 2022. Can the Golden Bears avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
