The Severance Silver Knights are taking a road trip to challenge the Berthoud Spartans at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. Severance is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 10.6 runs per game this season.
Severance is probably headed into the game with a chip on their shoulder considering Timnath just ended the team's five-game winning streak on Monday. They fell just short of the Cubs by a score of 2-1. The contest marked the Silver Knights' lowest-scoring matchup so far this season.
Hayden Crank spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered just two earned runs on four hits and racked up nine Ks.
Meanwhile, Berthoud had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 15 runs) and they went ahead and made it three on Monday. Their pitcher stepped up to hand the Grizzlies a 16-0 shutout. The result was nothing new for the Spartans, who have now won four games by seven runs or more so far this season.
Wyatt Barmes was a major factor no matter where he played. On the mound, he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out seven over four innings pitched. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with two runs and one triple. That triple marked the first that he has hit this season.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Gavin Kirk, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases, three runs, and one RBI. Berthoud is 4-1 when Kirk posts two or more runs, but 0-5 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Eli Richardson, who went 1-for-2 with three RBI, two runs, and one double.
Berthoud always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .750. That was just more of the same: they've now posted an OBP of .571 or higher in three consecutive matchups.
Berthoud's record now sits at 4-6. As for Severance, their defeat was their first in the league, dropping their league record down to 3-1 and their overall record down to 8-3.
Thursday's contest might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Severance has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .493. However, it's not like Berthoud struggles in that department as they've averaged .473. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Severance got the 'W' in their previous meeting two weeks ago against Berthoud by a conclusive 13-7 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Silver Knights since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
