The Jay Mustangs waltzed into their match Tuesday with two straight wins but they left with three. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 93-90 victory over Taft. Given Jay's advantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 136th, while Taft is ranked 611th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Jay was led to victory by Camrin Garza and Jarrius Jackson Jr. Garza scored 21 points along with eight rebounds and seven assists, while Jackson Jr scored 29 points. The match was Jackson Jr's seventh in a row with at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Elijah Baldwin, who scored 14 points along with nine rebounds.
Jay's victory was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 17-4. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 85.3 points per game. As for Taft, they are on a nine-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 7-17.
Jay will head out on the road to face off against Brennan at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. One thing working in Brennan's favor is that they have posted big point totals in their last 17 matches. As for Taft, they will look to defend their home court on Friday against Harlan at 7:30 p.m. Harlan has been dominant on offense recently, as they've racked up an incredible 804 points over their last 11 matchups.
