Newport has enjoyed a two-game homestand but will soon have to dust off their road jerseys. They will square off against The Taft Tigers at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Newport comes in on a streak of failing to score more than eight points in their last three games, a trend the squad is of course eager to reverse.
Last Friday, Newport took a serious blow against Scio, falling 44-8.
Meanwhile, Taft's three-game losing streak came to an end on Friday. They were the clear victor by a 36-16 margin over Amity. The result was nothing new for Taft, who have now won three matches by 20 points or more so far this season.
Armando Fajardo was on fire: he threw for 207 yards and four touchdowns, and also punched in a touchdown on the ground. Zack Hankins also helped out with an impressive 117 receiving yards.
Taft's win bumped their season record to 3-4 while Newport's defeat dropped theirs to 1-6.
Newport took their win against Taft in their previous meeting back in April of 2021 by a conclusive 35-14. The rematch might be a little tougher for Newport since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
