Softball Recap: Thornwell Wins Going Away Against Mccormick

Thornwell's game last Tuesday was a loss, but they didn't let that memory haunt them on Friday. They blew past the McCormick Chiefs 19-3. Considering the Saints have won three matches by more than 15 runs this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.

Skyla Bates was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she struck out eight batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits (and not a single walk). Bates was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring three runs and stealing two bases while getting on base in all three of her plate appearances. Bates is crushing it when it comes to stolen bases: she's snagged at least one every time she's taken the field this season.

In other batting news, Karleigh Porter and Madi Porter did most of the damage at the plate: Karleigh went 3-for-4 with five RBI, two runs, and one double, while Madi scored three runs and stole two bases while going 2-for-3. The dominant performance also gave Madi a new career-high in doubles (two). Lydia Hefner was another key player, going a perfect 2-for-2 with two stolen bases and two RBI.

Thornwell hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now struck out at most five strikeouts in five consecutive games dating back to last season.

Thornwell pushed their record up to 3-1 with the victory, which was their third straight on the road. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.0 runs on average over those games. As for McCormick, they are on a ten-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-2.

We've got plenty of inter-region action coming up soon. Thornwell will challenge rival Dixie at 4:15 p.m. on Monday. Meanwhile, McCormick is set to face off against their familiar foe Calhoun Falls Charter at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
