The Athens Wildcats posted their biggest win since December 6, 2023 on Wednesday. They breezed by Canton on the road to the tune of 66-38. Given Athens' advantage in MaxPreps' Pennsylvania basketball rankings (they are ranked 307th, while Canton is ranked 623rd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Athens' win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Connor Mosher, who scored 18 points along with two steals. Mosher has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last four times he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Nick Jacob, who scored 14 points.
When it comes to explaining why Canton lost, one person who can't be blamed is Ben Fitch. Despite the final result, he scored 18 points along with five rebounds. Brayden Vroman was another key contributor, scoring eight points along with seven rebounds.
Canton struggled to work together and finished the game with only an assist. They were crushed by their opponents in that department as Athens racked up 22 assists.
Athens has been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six games, which provided a nice bump to their 11-5 record this season. As for Canton, they have not been sharp recently, as they've lost five of their last six matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 6-11 record this season.
Athens' road trip will continue as they head out to face Wyalusing Valley at 7:30 p.m. on January 30th. Canton won't have much time to rest: their next match is against Northeast Bradford at 7:00 p.m. on January 25th. Northeast Bradford is coming into the match hot, having won their last five games.
