The Newington Nor'easters will square off against the Farmington River Hawks at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Newington is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 50 points per game this season.
Newington fought the good fight in their overtime game against Middletown on Friday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell 18-12 to the Blue Dragons. Surprisingly, this marked the Nor'easters' fifth straight game in which the away team has come away the victor.
The losing side was boosted by Josiah Sims, who picked up 61 receiving yards and one TD, and also punched in one score on the ground. He also put in work on the defensive side of the ball, forcing one fumble and making six total tackles.
Even if they lost, Newington's defense still kept up the pressure with three sacks. The team can thank three different players for their defensive prowess: Geronimo Ortiz, Heath Weeden, and David Garolrfo, who each picked up one sack apiece. Ortiz was another major factor on D, picking up a sack and making 11 total tackles (3.0 for loss).
Meanwhile, Farmington got the win against Bristol Eastern on Friday by a conclusive 30-6. The win made it back-to-back victories for the River Hawks.
Farmington didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off three passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Ajani Taylor and Tyler Thompson. Another thorn in Bristol Eastern's side was Michael Coccomo, who picked up two sacks, forced one fumble, and made two total tackles.
The win got Farmington back to even at 2-2. As for Newington, their defeat was their first of the season and makes their record 3-1.
Friday's contest might be decided in the trenches. Newington has been excellent on the ground this season, having averaged 159.2 rushing yards per game. It's a different story for Farmington, though, as they've been averaging an even more impressive 92.8 rushing yards. How will they fare against such a dominant running game?
Newington took their victory against Farmington when the teams last played back in November of 2024 by a conclusive 33-7 score. Do the Nor'easters have another victory up their sleeve, or will the River Hawks turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
