Springville is 9-1 against Maple Mountain since February of 2019, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Tuesday. The Springville Red Devils will head out on the road to face off against the Maple Mountain Golden Eagles at 5:15 p.m. Hopefully Springville focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 14 on Tuesday.
Springville's 23-3 record from last season is now well into the rear view mirror after another tough outing. They fell 38-30 to Spanish Fork. Springville has now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Despite their loss, Springville saw several players rise to the challenge and make noteworthy plays. Bella Esplin, who scored four points along with five assists and two steals, was perhaps the best of all. Another player making a difference was Brynn Johnson, who scored ten points.
Maple Mountain posted their closest victory yet this season on Friday. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past Manti 45-43. Given Maple Mountain's advantage in MaxPreps' Utah basketball rankings (they are ranked 28th, while Manti is ranked 86th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Jaynee Tanner was her usual excellent self, dropping a double-double on 18 points and 14 rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Shay Brown, who scored 11 points along with two steals.
Springville bumped their record down to 3-10 with that loss, which was their fourth straight at home. As for Maple Mountain, they are on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six matches, which provided a nice bump to their 11-3 record this season.
Tuesday's contest is shaping up to be a scrappy contest: Springville have been smashing the glass this season, having only averaged 30.6 rebounds per game. It's a different story for Maple Mountain, though, as they've been averaging only 35.8 rebounds per game. Given Springville's sizeable advantage in that area, Maple Mountain will need to find a way to close that gap.
