The Merritt Island Mustangs and the Eau Gallie Commodores squared off in some playoff action on Friday, but sadly the Merritt Island Mustangs had to settle for second. Merritt Island took a serious blow against Eau Gallie, falling 62-22. Merritt Island was in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 34-14.
Merritt Island's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performance. Perhaps the best among them was Ryder Varis, who picked up 161 receiving yards and a touchdown.
Latavious Welch was his usual excellent self, rushing for 267 yards and two touchdowns on only seven carries, while also picking up 31 receiving yards. Welch's longest rush was for an incredible 83 yards. Emmanuel Small also deserves a shout-out for his two touchdowns.
This is the second loss in a row for Merritt Island and nudges their season record down to 6-5. As for Eau Gallie, the win (which was their sixth in a row) raised their record to 10-1.
Merritt Island does not have any more games scheduled as of now. Eau Gallie will be playing at home against Sebring at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Sebring is also coming in off of a big victory, so somebody is in for a big reversal of fortune.
