The Midway Raiders will square off against the Southern Wayne Saints at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. The last five games Midway has played (dating back to last season) have been within two runs, so don't be surprised if it's a close one.
Midway blew Triton out of the water the last time the pair played, but on Monday Triton got their revenge. Midway fell just short of Triton by a score of 7-5. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest loss the Raiders have suffered since March 14, 2024.
Wyatt Herring put in work no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching 1.2 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. That's the fewest hits he has allowed since back in April of 2024. He was also big at the plate, scoring two runs and stealing a base while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances.
In other batting news, Wilson Mayo was cooking despite his team's loss, going a perfect 3-for-3 with one RBI. The dominant performance gave him a new career-high in hits. Another player making a difference was Carson Tew, who scored two runs and stole Two bases. while going 1-for-3.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Southern Wayne, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Monday. They were the clear victor by an 11-1 margin over Greene Central on Tuesday. Considering the Saints' hitters had been struggling lately, the high-scoring outing was a much-needed turnaround.
Like Midway, Southern Wayne also got a great game from a two-way player: Kaeden Hinson. On the mound, he didn't allow a single earned run while striking out seven over five innings pitched. Hinson has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 1-for-2. That stolen base was his first of the season.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Tyler Odom, who scored a run while going 2-for-4. Austin Watson was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 1-for-2.
Southern Wayne always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .586. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Greene Central only posted an OBP of .273.
Midway now has a losing record of 1-2. As for Southern Wayne, the win got them back to even at 2-2.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Friday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Midway has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 11 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Southern Wayne struggles in that department as they've been averaging 7 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
