Basketball Recap: Rincon/University Comes Up Short

Rincon/University lost against Sahuaro back in February of 2021 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Tuesday. The Rincon/University Rangers fell to the Sahuaro Cougars 74-70. Despite running the score up even higher than they did in their prior game last Friday (57), the Rangers still had to take the loss.

Defeat or not, Rincon/University got some senior leadership from Jonah (Sam) O'Dowd and Abel Munoz McDaniels. O'Dowd dropped a double-double on 21 points and 16 rebounds, while Munoz McDaniels went 10 for 18 on his way to 25 points. The match was Munoz McDaniels' fourth in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Jorge Allende Baez, who posted ten points.

Cisco Llamas continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines for Sahuaro, dropping a double-double on 31 points and 13 boards. Llamas has been hot, having also posted three or more steals the last five times he's played. Another player making a difference was Elijah Santini, who put up seven points and five assists.

Rincon/University's loss was their third straight at home, which dropped their record down to 8-10. Their recent woes sure aren't a result of their performance when it comes to three-point shooting accuracy: their three-point shooting accuracy was 32.6% in those games and 35.7% outside of them. As for Sahuaro, the win (which was their fifth in a row) raised their record to 15-1.

Rincon/University wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next game, an 82-79 defeat against Maryvale on the 17th. Sahuaro has also already played their next contest, a 66-62 victory against Walden Grove on the 17th.
