Cypress Lakes hasn't had much luck against Cypress Ranch recently, but that could start to change on Saturday. The Spartans will face off against the Mustangs at 7:00 p.m. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, these teams will really light up the scoreboard.
Cypress Lakes will bounce into Saturday's matchup after beating Cypress Woods, who they had gone 0-9 against in their nine prior meetings. The Spartans blew past the Wildcats 36-0 on Saturday. The score at the end of the third wound up being the final score as the Spartans just coasted through the last quarter.

Jimmy Alarcon was his usual excellent self, throwing for 271 yards and three touchdowns on only 17 passes, while also rushing for 38 yards and one score. He is becoming a predictor of Cypress Lakes' success: when he posts at least three passing touchdowns the team is 2-1 (and 1-2 when he doesn't). The Spartans also got a significant boost from Theodis Fields, who ran away from the competition to the tune of 97 yards.
Wins are hard to come by when you can't run the rock, something Cypress Lakes proved: they limited Cypress Woods to a paltry one yards per carry. The team can thank De' Shaun Butler for the heroic effort on defense: he. Cypress Lakes' ground attack was stronger, having averaged 4.4.
Meanwhile, Cypress Ranch had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 38.5 points) and they went ahead and made it three on Friday. They skirted past the Bulldogs 35-33.
Cypress Lakes better keep an eye on Braden Baker. He was instrumental in Cypress Ranch's win, rushing for 82 yards and one TD on only seven carries, while also throwing for 191 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Those 82 rushing yards gave Baker a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Peyton Thomas, who rushed for 72 yards and one score.
Cypress Ranch's defensive line made their presence known, laying out Tristin 'T.K' Gaines four times. In that department, Johnathan Long was the leader with two sacks.
Cypress Ranch's record is now 4-2. As for Cypress Lakes, the win got them back to even at 3-3.
Saturday's game will pit two of the most dominant signal callers against one another: Alarcon and Baker. Alarcon just won't slow down this season and has thrown 17 touchdowns while averaging 216.7 passing yards per game. Baker has been a dominant force too and has thrown 18 touchdowns while averaging 229.5 passing yards per game.
Cypress Lakes couldn't quite get it done against Cypress Ranch when the teams last played back in October of 2024 as they fell 45-33. Can the Spartans avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
