McAllen (Texas) received a huge boost from its defense against Pharr-San Juan-Alamo (San Juan, Texas), as the unit scored 12 in defeating Pharr-San Juan-Alamo (San Juan, Texas), 45-9.
After taking the lead on a touchdown pass by
Fred Hover to
Justin Gonzalez in the first quarter, the Bulldogs led 35-0 at the half.
McAllen expanded its lead to 39 points entering the fourth quarter. MHS scored once in the quarter on a touchdown pass by Hover to
Garrett Thomas.
The Bulldogs' standout player in the win was Hover. The sophomore quarterback threw three touchdowns and kicked one field goal and one extra point.
The Bears' lone touchdown came on a 30-yard run in the fourth quarter.
Coming into the game McAllen had allowed 21.6 points per game this year.
MHS also won the meeting between the two teams last season, 41-40.
The win was a nice bounce back for the Bulldogs, which lost to Weslaco East last week, 35-7.
McAllen (5-1) goes up against San Benito in a 5A Region IV District 31 game matchup next week, while Pharr-San Juan-Alamo (1-6) locks horns with San Benito also in a 5A Region IV District 31 game.
