River Ridge took a loss when they played away from home on Thursday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Monday. Jaylah Sok Vandergriff was a major factor no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only two hits while striking out 14 over five innings pitched. Those 14 strikeouts gave her a new career-high. She was also big at the plate, going a perfect 3-for-3 with four runs, two RBI, and one double.
In other batting news, Raylie Birklid and Kaylani Karageorge did most of the damage at the plate: Birklid went 2-for-3 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs, while Karageorge got on base in all four of her plate appearances with three runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. That's the most RBI Karageorge has posted since back in March. Jessica Clarke was another key player, going 1-for-2 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.
River Ridge always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .730. They are a perfect 5-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.
Meanwhile, Capital fell victim to Timberline and their airtight pitching crew on Monday. They lost 21-0 to the Blazers. Having soared to a lofty 21 runs in the game before, the Cougars' shutout was a dramatic turnaround.
Capital has also been struggling recently as they've lost four of their last five games. That's still a better percentage than their 2-11-1 record this season. Those defeats can't be blamed on the team's hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 6.4 runs over those games. As for River Ridge, their victory bumped their record up to 6-8.
Capital's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: River Ridge has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .435. It's a different story for Capital, though, as they've only averaged .335. Will they be able to contain River Ridge's hitters?
River Ridge got the 'W' in their previous matchup back in March against Capital by a conclusive 18-4 score. Do the Hawks have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Cougars turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
