With a playoff game on the line, the California Trojans rose to the challenge on Friday. They claimed a resounding 44-6 win over Jeannette at home. California might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team's won ten games by 27 points or more this season.
California had a senior duo take command as Spencer Petrucci rushed for 189 yards and three touchdowns while picking up 9.0 yards per carry and Jake Layhue rushed for 145 yards and two touchdowns while picking up 8.5 yards per carry. Petrucci hasn't dropped below 100 rushing yards for six straight games.
Another reason for the win was California's imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for seven sacks. The heavy lifting was done by Malachi Peak and Fred Sherman who racked up five sacks between them.
Despite the loss, Jeannette still got an impressive performance from Noah Sanders, who picked up 107 receiving yards and a touchdown.
The victory (which was California's eighth in a row) raised their record to 10-2. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 53.0 points per game. As for Jeannette, they have been struggling recently, as they've lost three of their last four games, which put a noticeable dent in their 7-4 record this season.
California will head out on the road to face off against Bishop Canevin at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. One thing working in Bishop Canevin's favor is that they have now posted big point totals in their last three games. Jeannette does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
