Softball Game Preview: South Portland Red Riots vs. Noble Knights

South Portland and Noble are an even 5-5 against one another since April of 2015, but likely not for long. The Red Riots will be playing at home against the Knights at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. South Portland is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.3 runs per game this season.

For whatever reason, it's the away team that's had the advantage when South Portland and Scarborough meet (three straight games heading into this one) and that held true again on Wednesday. The Red Riots walked away with a 7-2 victory over the Red Storm.

Maegan Berry made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She struck out nine batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off four hits (and not a single walk). Those nine strikeouts gave her a new career-high. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 3-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Sadie Soucy, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with three RBI, one run, and one double. Those four hits gave her a new career-high. Lucy Wetzel was another key player, going 1-for-2 with two runs and one double.

South Portland was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .455. They are 4-2 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.

Meanwhile, Noble was not able to break out of their rough patch on Wednesday as the team picked up their eighth straight loss. They came up short against Windham, falling 18-3.

Noble's defeat dropped their record down to 2-9. As for South Portland, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four matches. That's provided a massive bump to their 5-7 record this season.

South Portland took their win against Noble in their previous meeting back in April of 2024 by a conclusive 25-0 score. Will the Red Riots repeat their success, or do the Knights have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
