Illini West and Camp Point Central are an even 5-5 against one another since April of 2017, but likely not for long. The Chargers will welcome the Panthers at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. The timing is sure in Illini West's favor as the team sits on 12 straight wins at home (dating back to last season) while Camp Point Central has been banged up by six consecutive losses on the road also dating back to last season.
Illini West made up a huge gap compared to their last game against Quincy, but they still couldn't quite topple them. The Chargers blew past the Blue Devils 8-1 on Tuesday. Considering the Chargers have won six matches by more than six runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.
Wesley Robertson made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching four innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. Robertson was also big at the plate, going 1-for-2 with one home run and two runs.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Shawn Watkins Jr., who went 1-for-3 with three RBI and one triple. Carter Chapin was another key player, scoring a run while going 2-for-4.
For some reason, the away team has come away with the win the last four times Camp Point Central and Monmouth United have met, but the home crowd finally got their W on Thursday. The Panthers fell just short of the Red Storm by a score of 5-4.
Briggs Wiskirchen made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and scored two runs and stole two bases while going 3-for-4. He is becoming a predictor of Camp Point Central's success: when he posts at least three hits the team is 3-1 (and 0-4 when he doesn't). The team also got some help courtesy of Nate Peters, who scored a run and stole two bases while going 1-for-3.
Camp Point Central's loss dropped their record down to 3-5. As for Illini West, their win bumped their record up to 9-1.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Thursday as neither team is afraid to steal. Illini West has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 4.5 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Camp Point Central struggles in that department as they've been averaging 2.8 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Everything went Illini West's way against Camp Point Central in their previous matchup back in April of 2024, as Illini West made off with a 7-0 victory. Do the Chargers have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Panthers turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
