The Leonard Lancers will venture away from home to take on the Somerset Academy - Canyons Cougars at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. Leonard is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 15 runs per game this season.
On Thursday, Leonard got the win against Atlantic Christian by a conclusive 20-3. The Lancers might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won six contests by six runs or more this season.
Yanina Varela made a big impact no matter where she played. On the mound, she pitched four innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off one hit. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in four consecutive appearances. She was even better at the plate, going 3-for-4 with five RBI, two runs, and one stolen base.
In other batting news, Arianna Sheerer was incredible, scoring four runs and stealing a base while getting on base in all five of her plate appearances. Another player making a difference was Alexis Resto, who scored three runs and stole two bases while getting on base in four of her five plate appearances.
Leonard was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .409. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Atlantic Christian only posted a batting average of .200.
Meanwhile, Somerset Academy - Canyons lost 18-5 to Calvary Christian Academy on Wednesday.
Lisa Nguyen and Brianna Ayala did some serious damage despite the final result: Nguyen scored a run and stole a base while getting on base in all three of her plate appearances, while Ayala scored two runs and stole a base while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances. That stolen base marked the first that Nguyen snagged this season.
Leonard now has a winning record of 7-6. As for Somerset Academy - Canyons, their loss dropped their record down to 4-6.
Somerset Academy - Canyons' pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Leonard hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .362. It's a different story for Somerset Academy - Canyons, though, as they've only averaged .256. Will they be able to contain Leonard's hitters?
Leonard suffered a grim 16-0 defeat to Somerset Academy - Canyons in their previous meeting back in April of 2023. Can the Lancers avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
