Softball Recap: Central Takes a Loss

Central dropped their record down to 4-4 on Thursday, which also ended the team's three-game streak of wins. They fell just short of the Washington Academy Raiders by a score of 7-6. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Raiders this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 1-0 back in April.

As for Washington Academy, the victory (which was their fifth in a row) raised their record to 6-1. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.4 runs on average over those games.

For Washington Academy's part, Bella Cirone made a big impact no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 11 batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned (and four unearned) runs off five hits. Cirone has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts any time she's pitched this season. She was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with two runs and one stolen base.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Grace Dennison, who got on base in three of her four plate appearances with one stolen base and two RBI. Lily Hennessey was another key player, going 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI.

We've got plenty of inter-region action coming up soon. Central will face off against rival Maine Central Institute at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. Meanwhile, Washington Academy is set to challenge their familiar foe Sumner at 4:30 p.m. on Monday.
