The Culver Academies Eagles waltzed into their matchup on Saturday with seven straight wins but they left with eight. They simply couldn't be stopped as they easily beat East Chicago Central 54-27 at home. Given Culver Academies' advantage in MaxPreps' Indiana basketball rankings (they are ranked 130th, while East Chicago Central is ranked 293rd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Culver Academies' success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Margaret Smith led the charge by scoring 14 points along with two steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Smith has scored all season. Reid Seddelmeyer was another key contributor, scoring nine points along with five rebounds.
Culver Academies has been performing well recently as they've won ten of their last 13 games, which provided a nice bump to their 15-7 record this season. As for East Chicago Central, they dropped their record down to 7-11 with that loss, which was their fifth straight on the road.
Culver Academies does not have any more games scheduled as of now. East Chicago Central on the road again on Wednesday and play against Hammond Central at 5:00 p.m. on January 31st. Hammond Central knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with flashy point totals in its past five games -- so hopefully East Chicago Central likes a good challenge.
