Basketball Recap: Dan River Comes Up Short

Dan River was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their ninth straight loss dating back to last season. They fell 57-44 to the Gretna Hawks. The Wildcats lost against the Hawks in their previous head to head back in January, too, but the margin this time around was much closer than the 59-22 score last time.

Despite the defeat, Dan River saw an underclassman step up: freshman Liza Maxey shot 5-for-9 from deep and dropped a double-double on 17 points and ten boards. Those ten boards set a new season-high mark for Maxey. Another player making a difference was Katie Evans, who posted eight points in addition to six boards and three steals.

Even though they lost, Dan River was working as a unit and finished the game with 11 assists. That's the most assists they've managed all season.

Gretna's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Ashley Myers, who went 8 of 16 on her way to 21 points. The dominant performance gave Myers a new career-high in points. The team also got some help courtesy of Shakira Jones, who went 7 of 13 on her way to 17 points.

Dan River's loss dropped their record down to 0-6. As for Gretna, the victory was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 5-1.

Dan River wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next match, a 46-21 defeat against Patrick County on the 19th. As for Gretna, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 62-54 loss against Tunstall on the 18th.
