The Morehead Panthers struggled with offensive rebounds on Friday (the Piedmont Classical Bobcats had 13 more) and sadly the final score reflected it. Morehead fell just short of Piedmont Classical by a score of 48-45.
Despite the defeat, Morehead saw an underclassman step up: Destiny Minter scored 21 points along with seven rebounds and two steals. That was a full 46.7% of Morehead's points, marking the eighth time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. Ananhi Morales was another key contributor, scoring eight points along with six rebounds.
Piedmont Classical got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Ge'Kayla Goins out in front who scored 14 points along with seven steals. Goins has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last five times she's played. Another player making a difference was Keniya Waring, who dropped a double-double on ten points and 12 rebounds.
Morehead's loss dropped their record down to 4-15. As for Piedmont Classical, the victory (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 9-8.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Morehead's road trip will continue as they head out to face Reidsville at 6:00 p.m. on February 13th. Hopefully Morehead focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 21 on Friday. As for Piedmont Classical, they will head out on the road to square off against Bishop McGuinness at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Bishop McGuinness knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with flashy point totals in its past six matchups -- so hopefully Piedmont Classical likes a good challenge.
