South Plaquemines is a perfect 6-0 against St. Mary's Academy since March of 2016 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Saturday. The Hurricanes will head out to face off against the Cougars at 12:30 p.m. South Plaquemines has given up an average of 15.1 runs per game this season, but Saturday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.
Friday just wasn't the day for South Plaquemines' offense. They might be feeling deja-vu: they lost 15-0 to Newman, which was the same score (and result) they got the week prior. The Hurricanes have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
South Plaquemines saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Shylen Prout, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with one stolen base.
Meanwhile, St. Mary's Academy got themselves on the board against St. Katharine Drexel on Friday, but St. Katharine Drexel never followed suit. They were the clear victors by a 15-0 margin over the Yellowjackets. The result was nothing new for the Cougars, who have now won eight contests by ten runs or more so far this season.
Danielle Beard was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, tossing three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. Those hits marked the first that she allowed this season. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one home run, two runs, and one stolen base.
In other batting news, Carin Marshall and Nave Batiste did most of the damage at the plate: Marshall went a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, two stolen bases, and three RBI, while Batiste scored three runs and stole five bases while going 2-for-2. Those two hits gave Batiste a new career-high. Chloe Harris was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing two bases while getting on base in two of her three plate appearances.
St. Mary's Academy kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That's a new trend for them: they were averaging 4.6 hits per game earlier this season, but in their last 15 matches they've averaged 9.8.
St. Mary's Academy's record now sits at 8-6-1. As for South Plaquemines, their loss was their first in the district, dropping their district record down to 2-1 and their overall record down to 5-9.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Saturday as neither team is afraid to steal. South Plaquemines has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.5 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like St. Mary's Academy struggles in that department as they've been averaging 13.7 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Everything went South Plaquemines' way against St. Mary's Academy in their previous matchup back in March of 2023, as South Plaquemines made off with a 21-1 win. Will the Hurricanes repeat their success, or do the Cougars have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
