Basketball Recap: Pungo Christian Academy Comes Up Short

Pungo Christian Academy was the 62-59 winner over Christ Covenant when they last played one another back in November of 2024, but their luck changed this time around. The Pungo Christian Academy Raiders fell to the Christ Covenant Spartans 69-64. While the Raiders didn't get the win, they did start the game off strong, beating the Spartans 18-14 in the first quarter.

Despite the loss, Pungo Christian Academy saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Marshall Ricks almost dropped a double-double on 26 points and nine rebounds. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Ricks has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Michael Cripe, who posted 15 points and eight assists.

Even though they lost, Pungo Christian Academy was working as a unit and finished the game with 20 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Christ Covenant only racked up 14 assists.

Christ Covenant had a senior duo take command as Noah Stein went 6 for 11 from beyond the arc en route to 34 points and JD Dill dropped a double-double on 18 points and 21 boards. That makes it three consecutive games in which Stein has scored at least a third of Christ Covenant's points. Another player making a difference was Jakob Ange, who had six points.

Pungo Christian Academy has traveled a rocky road recently having lost nine of their last 12 matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 7-12 record this season. That patch can't be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 50.4 points per game. As for Christ Covenant, they now have a winning record of 10-9.

Pungo Christian Academy has already played their next game, a 68-50 defeat against Lawrence Academy on the 29th. Christ Covenant has also already played their next contest (against John Paul II Catholic), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing.
