Baseball Game Preview: Poudre Impalas vs. Greeley West Spartans

Poudre and Greeley West are an even 3-3 against one another since April of 2015, but likely not for long. Poudre will square off against Greeley West at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Poudre will be strutting in after a victory while Greeley West will be coming in after a loss.

Poudre was handed a seven-run defeat in their previous outing, but that didn't affect their clutch gene on Saturday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 9-8 win over Highlands Ranch.

The team relied heavily on Chase Barrett, who scored two runs while going 2-for-4. He is becoming a predictor of Poudre's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 0-3 when he doesn't).

Meanwhile, Greeley West was not able to break out of their rough patch on Monday as the team picked up their third straight loss. They took a 4-1 hit to the loss column at the hands of Erie.

Poudre is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 3-3 record this season. They've had to fight for that success though, as they only beat their opponents by an average of one runs across that stretch. Greeley West's defeat dropped their record down to 4-6.

The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Tuesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Poudre has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 9.2 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Greeley West struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 6.9 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.

Poudre took their victory against Greeley West in their previous meeting back in March of 2023 by a conclusive 11-1. The rematch might be a little tougher for Poudre since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
