The Tolleson Wolverines will head out to challenge the Sunnyslope Vikings at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Tolleson is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.7 runs per game this season.
Tolleson is headed in fresh off scoring the most runs they have all season. They were the clear victors by an 18-2 margin over Cesar Chavez on Tuesday. The win continues a trend for the Wolverines in their matchups with the Champions: they've now won eight in a row.
Tolleson got a great performance from Valentina Aceves as she didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit over five innings pitched.
At the plate, Jada Rubalcava and Dani Chairez did most of the damage at the plate: Rubalcava went 2-for-3 with one home run, five RBI, and two runs, while Chairez scored four runs and stole a base while going 3-for-4. That's the most hits Chairez has posted since back in March. Another player making a difference was Marina Lara, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with two RBI.
Tolleson always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .579. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Cesar Chavez only posted an OBP of .429.
Meanwhile, Monday just wasn't the day for Sunnyslope's offense. They came up short against Arizona College Prep on Monday, falling 11-0. Having soared to a lofty 17 runs in the game before, the Vikings' shutout was a dramatic turnaround.
Sunnyslope's defeat was their eighth straight on the road dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 5-8. As for Tolleson, their record is now 15-4.
Tolleson's speedy runners might be the difference in Wednesday's matchup. The Wolverines have been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 5.7 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Sunnyslope, though, as they've been averaging only 1 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Tolleson continue to outrun the ball?
Tolleson came out on top in a nail-biter against Sunnyslope in their previous meeting back in April of 2022, sneaking past 2-0. Will the Wolverines repeat their success, or do the Vikings have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
