The Southern Aroostook Warriors are taking a road trip to take on the Katahdin Cougars at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. Southern Aroostook is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.3 runs per game this season.
Southern Aroostook is coming in off a wild two-game stretch: after soaring to ten runs on Monday, they were much more limited against Hodgdon on Tuesday. They lost 6-0 to the Hawks. The game marked the first time this year in which the Warriors were not able to get on the board.
Meanwhile, Katahdin strolled into their game on Wednesday with a perfect record and they left with the same. Their pitchers stepped up to hand Washburn a 21-0 shutout. That 21 run margin sets a new team best for the Cougars this season.
Calvin Richardson made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with two stolen bases and three runs.
In other batting news, Katahdin got a massive performance out of Bryten Hartsgrove, who went 3-for-5 with three runs, four RBI, and one double. Those four RBI gave Hartsgrove a new career-high. Bradley Swallow was another key player, going 3-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI.
Katahdin always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .579. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Washburn only posted an OBP of .118.
Katahdin's victory was their tenth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 11-0. The home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.9 runs over those games. As for Southern Aroostook, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost four of their last five matchups. That's put a noticeable dent in their 4-6 record this season.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Friday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Southern Aroostook has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.7 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Katahdin struggles in that department as they've been averaging 7.5 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Southern Aroostook suffered a grim 12-1 defeat to Katahdin in their previous meeting on May 13th. Can the Warriors avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
