The Elkhart Lions will take on the Goshen RedHawks at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Elkhart is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.7 runs per game this season.
If Elkhart beats Goshen with six runs on Friday, it's going to be the squad's new lucky number: they've won their past two games with that exact score. The Lions had just enough and edged out South Bend Riley 6-5 on Thursday. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Lions have posted since May 15, 2024.
Laci Stimac spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and three unearned) runs on eight hits.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Ava Walker, who went 2-for-4 with three RBI, one stolen base, and one run. Addison Reid was another key player, going 1-for-3 with two RBI, one run, and one double.
Meanwhile, Goshen made easy work of Bremen on Tuesday and carried off an 11-4 victory. The win made it back-to-back victories for the RedHawks.
Abi Blankenship made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 13 batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned (and three unearned) runs off eight hits (and not a single walk). Blankenship was also solid in the batter's box, going 3-for-5 with two runs.
In other batting news, Rachel Aceves was excellent, going 2-for-4 with three RBI, one triple, and one run. Another player making a difference was Abby Snyder, who got on base in three of her five plate appearances with one stolen base and one RBI.
Elkhart pushed their record up to 4-2 with the win, which was their seventh straight at home dating back to last season. Those home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.0 runs over those games. As for Goshen, they now have a winning record of 2-1.
Goshen's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Elkhart hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .318. It's a different story for Goshen, though, as they've only averaged .256. Will they be able to contain Elkhart's hitters?
Everything went Elkhart's way against Goshen when the teams last played back in May of 2024, as Elkhart made off with an 11-2 win. Will the Lions repeat their success, or do the RedHawks have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
