The Academy at the Lakes Wildcats will face off against the Hernando Leopards at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Academy at the Lakes is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.6 runs per game this season.
On Tuesday, Academy at the Lakes was able to grind out a solid win over Pasco, taking the game 7-3.
Ella Picard was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She didn't allow a single earned run while striking out seven over seven innings pitched. Picard was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and one RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Nola Reilly, who scored a run while going 2-for-4. Another player making a difference was Kiana Wright, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 1-for-4.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Hernando). They put the hurt on Bishop McLaughlin Catholic with a sharp 21-2 victory on Monday. The Leopards might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won six matchups by ten runs or more this season.
Like Academy at the Lakes, Hernando also got a great game from a two-way player: Kaitlyn Carter. On the mound, she pitched two innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits. Carter has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in seven consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, scoring a run while getting on base in all three of her plate appearances.
In other batting news, Ammarae Easton was a standout: she went 2-for-3 with one home run, four RBI, and two runs. Ariana Covell was another key player, scoring three runs and stealing four bases while getting on base in all three of her plate appearances.
Hernando always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .759. They are a perfect 6-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.
Hernando now has a winning record of 6-5. As for Academy at the Lakes, their win ended a five-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 3-5.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Wednesday as neither team is afraid to steal. Academy at the Lakes has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Hernando struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 4.9 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Academy at the Lakes skirted past Hernando 3-1 when the teams last played back in March of 2024. Does Academy at the Lakes have another victory up their sleeve, or will Hernando turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
